The Lord’s Supper (Index)

The congregation of which I am a member, Remnant Reformed Church, has recently been studying the question of the frequency with which the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper is administered. Because Scripture does not prescribe a specific number of times the Supper must be observed, our consideration of this question led us first to study the doctrine of the Lord’s Supper itself. That study has revealed two things: our own ignorance concerning the Supper, and God’s merciful kindness in leading us to a deeper understanding of the spiritual feast he has given to his church.

What follows is an index of material produced as part of this study, along with additional resources that address the topic. It is my prayer that this material may be useful to other churches and to other of God’s children as they consider the glorious truth of the Lord’s Supper and perhaps reevaluate the reasons for its infrequent administration in many Reformed churches, as well as the considerations that might commend a more frequent observance of this spiritual feast.

The Lord has been pleased to show us again the beauty and spiritual depth of the riches found in the Reformed confessions on this subject. Speaking personally, he has led me from a state of blind ignorance regarding the Lord’s Supper, when I once recoiled at the approach of the Lord’s Days that treat of it, to a hunger not only to hear more about this Supper, but also to an eager longing for its more frequent administration. Such longing is nothing less than a God-given appetite for the gospel of Jesus Christ.

May God be pleased to use the fruit he has graciously granted our congregation for the benefit of others of his children who are themselves beginning this study.

These are glorious days, indeed.

    • Our congregation’s study of this topic began in early 2025 when our pastor, Rev. Lanning, wrote a series of articles in the Reformed periodical, Reformed Pavilion, from February 22 to April 26, 2025. These articles have since been compiled into a pamphlet, which you can find here or at the link above.
  • On May 6, 2025, the council of Remnant Reformed Church formed a committee to bring advice regarding the frequency of which the Lord’s Supper was administered. On July 1, 2025, the committee distributed to the council a pamphlet containing the articles from Reformed Pavilion dealing with the frequency of the Lord’s Supper. On October 7 the council approved several recommendations of the committee, including scheduling Doctrines Classes “to instruct the congregation on the biblical and confessional principles involved in a reconsideration of our current ordinance of administering the Lord’s Supper only four times per year.” Four Doctrines Classes were held on the following dates (each date is linked to a recording of that class):
  • At the January 6 council meeting, the council scheduled another Doctrines Class, which was held via Zoom, again with time for questions and discussion.
  • For those who would like to read a transcript of the four Doctrines Classes, you can find that here.
  • A final Doctrines Class was held where the decision of the council was explained and time was given for questions and answers.
